An open mind, like an open window should be screened to keep the bugs out - Virgina Hutchison
TOGY was set up to give young people the opportunity to take their first tentative steps towards building a performing arts career. However, its also about building confidence, having fun and perfecting an art. We provide a happy, supportive environment for young people to learn more about the theatre, film and TV industries.
At TOGY we believe in a fully rounded education. The majority of our work is practical and supplements the studies that students undertake in schools. We are strong believers that there is no 'right way', it would be like saying there is a 'right way' to paint a picture or a 'right way' to write a song. We believe young people should be given access to a range of stimuli and then given the space to form their own creative opinions.
We hold classes every Saturday at Old Hall School in Wellington. Regular practise is vital as we're dealing with the body as an instrument. We encourage students to work individually toward group goals and the atmosphere is treated much more like a workshop. The freedom to experiment is of major importance, as is the freedom to fail.
Our staff are working professionals trained to the highest standards currently available. It is important to us to use people working now, because information in the creative industries can become quickly out of date. What was a right way to build a career in the 1990s, isn't necessarily the way now.
We hold annual exams (LAMDA) and regular masterclasses with guest practitioners. We put on regular plays and musicals and hold annual awards days and We have an unparalled record in the UK for the number of graduates taking up drama school places or working within the industry.
